The Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) is a user facility located within the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), where research is conducted using high-intensity pulsed neutrons and muons.
By combining some of the world’s most intense short-pulse neutron and muon beams with state-of-the-art experimental instruments, the facility enables high-sensitivity, high-speed, and high-resolution measurements, — even under complex sample environment. This supports cutting-edge research and development across a wide range of fields, from fundamental science to industrial applications.

MLF is recognized as one of the leading neutron and muon research facilities in the Asia–Oceania region and accepts proposal applications from researchers around the world. These proposals are reviewed by an international selection committee, and those that  receiving high evaluations are approved for implementation.

At the MLF of J-PARC, 21 neutron beamlines are currently in operation.
Of these, seven beamlines have been established and are operated by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) as public beamlines, available for collaborative use by researchers from both Japan and overseas.
