CROSS provides various forms of support to universities, research institutions, and companies in their use of experimental instruments located within the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF).
At MLF, experiments are conducted to investigate the properties of a wide range of substances and materials, including superconductors, battery materials, hydrogen storage alloys, polymers, food products, and proteins.
Once your application is approved, anyone is eligible to conduct experiments at MLF.
This page offers information for those considering conducting using MLF, including how CROSS supports your experimental activities.

At CROSS, we provide support for a wide range of inquiries, from technical consultations on planning experiments using MLF’s instruments and understanding their capabilities, to administrative guidance on proposal applications and usage procedures.
If you are considering using the experimental instruments, please feel free to contact us.
At CROSS, we have established a program designed to give priority access to individuals who have never used the neutron beam facilities at MLF. The goal is to help them understand the value and utility of the facility, ultimately encouraging full-scale and expanded use in the future.
Under this program, CROSS beamline staff provide comprehensive support—from writing experiment proposals to preparing post-experiment reports.
We provide a variety of support to help you achieve your experimental goals, including guidance on operating experimental instruments and data analysis software, on-site assistance during experiments, and advice on experimental design and analysis methods.
We collaborate with related organizations to offer a wide range of events and workshops.
These include sessions on industrial applications of neutron experiments, the combined use of neutrons and synchrotron radiation, experimental and analytical techniques, specific materials, and introductory-level training.
These events are designed to support your research planning and information-gathering efforts.
Some sessions are also available online through platforms such as Zoom.
A range of user preparation rooms is available for tasks such as sample fabrication, adjustment, property evaluation, and processing required for experiments.
(Please note that a separate application is required to use these rooms, in addition to the application for experimental instruments.)
In addition to the preparation rooms, user-dedicated facilities are available for data analysis, report writing, and information exchange.
We offer a wide range of support services, so even those with no prior experience using the experimental instruments at MLF can feel confident and comfortable.
Please don’t hesitate to contact our user support desk for assistance.
