The J-PARC MLF 2018B General Use (Short Term) Proposal Round Call for Proposals
The J-PARC MLF is pleased to announce the opening of the 2018B General Use (Short Term) proposal round from Thursday 17 May 2018.
Researchers wishing to conduct experiments at any of the MLF neutron or muon beamlines during 2018B (November 2018 – March 2019) are invited to submit proposals via the J-PARC Proposal Submission System by the following deadline:

* Demand on the Proposal Submission System is typically very high on the closing day. You are strongly recommended to submit your proposal well in advance of the deadline.
PLEASE NOTE
- Expected beam power in 2018B is 500 kW.
- When submitting the proposal, please use the latest application form.
For Non-Proprietary Use / For Proprietary Use - The use of nuclear fuel as a sample is prohibited. Only RI samples permitted by the MLF may be used.
- Users who wish to bring in electrical equipment whose power output rating is 7.5kW and above/7.5kVA and above or equipment whose current rating is 30A and above must include the detailed equipment specifications in the research plan.
- Graduate students (master’s and doctor’s course) can apply as a Principal Investigator (PI) on a proposal from 2018 B.
【Points to consider relevant to the proposal by a graduate student】
- Contact the instrument scientists before submitting the proposal.
- Enter “Graduate Student” in the field of the applicant’s job position.
- The applicant’s academic supervisor and the supervisor of the experiment must be included as Collaborators. Add “Academic Supervisor” or “Supervisor of the Experiment” in the field of the respective job positions.
- In principle, the supervisor of the experiment must be an academic staff member of the applicant’s university including the academic supervisor or a research collaborator (a graduate student is not acceptable).
- When the proposal is approved, the academic supervisor is required to submit the specified pledge for implementing the experiment.
- KEK beamlines (refer to “Instruments available”) cannot accept undergraduate students as Collaborators. However, it accepts their participation in the research as interns.
- Within 60 days after the end of the proposal term of your experiment, the PI (except those of proprietary proposals) is required to submit an Experimental Report. These reports will be open to public on the J-PARC Web site.
- Intent to Publish: As a condition of performing nonproprietary research, the J-PARC MLF requires users to publish results from their research within 3 years after the completion of the experiment. Authorship of publications based on research from the facility should reflect the normal considerations of recognizing collaborations. It is also important to take into account the considerable efforts of the instrument scientists in their role of designing, constructing, and/or operating the instrument and related facilities. Proprietary users are not required to publish.
- The assessment of proposals will take into account whether Experiment Reports for previous beamtime allocations have been submitted as required.
- The web publication of the extract of the approved and conducted proposals shall contain the following information. (Non-proprietary Use, Proprietary Use) [Post-Proposal Review] Proposal number, PI’s name, Affiliation, Nationality of the PI’s affiliation, Beamline number, Assigned beamtime. [Post-Research] Title of Proposal, Allocated beamtime
- Again in the 2018B proposal round, applicants will be asked to indicate if their research has affinity with the Japanese national priority research areas as identified in the Elements Strategy Initiative. Similarly, applicants will be asked if their proposed research includes, or is likely to include in the future, the complementary use of other major research facilities such as, but not limited to, synchrotron radiation sources (SPring-8, SACLA, PF etc.), supercomputer (K computer etc.), or other quantum beam facilities. If either of the above applies to your proposal, please indicate by marking the relevant check box and adding a brief description as requested. The data is used only to survey current trends in research proposals at the MLF.
