The Neutron Science Center of the Comprehensive Research Organization of Science and Society (CROSS) is an organization selected as a registered institution promoting use of facilities by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The center promotes the use of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (J-PARC MLF), the specified neutron beam facility. Following the second phase which started in 2016, we launched the third phase last April with the following five goals.
1. to acquire new users and expand into new application fields by promoting inter-organizational collaboration,
2. effective use of the 1 MW high-intensity neutron beam and improvement of beamtime utilization efficiency,
3. introduction of new performance indicators and rapid dissemination of outstanding results,
4. to become a world-class quantum beam facility, bringing researchers from around the world to the facility, and
5. to foster human resources who will contribute to the development of neutron science.
Although FY2021 was a year in which we were swamped by the new coronavirus countermeasures following FY2020, we made steady progress toward achieving our goals by providing experimental support at MLF, as well as proposal selection, information support, production analysis, seminars/workshops, and promotion of industrial applications.
In FY2022, in preparation for the 800kW operation of the MLF starting in April, we will advance the sophistication and automation of the equipment and support for remote operation. We will also actively promote the use of J-PARC and JRR-3 through the common platform J-JOIN (J-Joint Office for Innovation), which was launched last year. Meanwhile, we are confident that the Quantum Beam Analysis Alliance, which was started as a successor project to the successfully completed Functional Polymer Consortium, will lead to the acquisition of new users and development of new application fields through promotion of inter-organizational collaboration. In addition, through workshops based on the agreement with the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO), we will play a part in the activities of MLF, a world-class quantum beam facility.
The current situation in Ukraine, which is becoming more and more tense by the day, affects our lives more than the corona disaster, and it is forcing us to make major changes in international security, financial economy, and social conventions. In this circumstance, we at CROSS will faithfully fulfil our social responsibility as before. We ask for the understanding and support of our users and the community at large.
